She works part-time on the weekends and enjoys having and spending her own money. She loves music and dance, and was in her high school musical production each year for the past 4 years.
She is hoping to study Hospitality and Tourism at NBCC this coming fall, and her dream job would be working in the hospitality industry. With the help of NBACL’s Transition program, Greer has been able to gain the skills necessary to make this dream a reality.
Did you know that 75% of adults who have an intellectual disability in our province are unemployed? Did you know that 70% of adults who have an intellectual disability in our province live in poverty? Did you know that there are 60 high schools across our province that do not have a Transition program, and if not supported, students who have an intellectual disability have a high chance of being unemployed and living in poverty?
75% of the students that take part in NBACL’s Transition to Work Program gain employment, leading them to a future of independence and opportunity.
Although Greer is excited for graduation, the majority of students with an intellectual disability graduating this June in our province are scared of what their future will bring. Will they become part of the unemployment and poverty statistics, or will they go to work and become contributing members of our community? It’s your choice!
