We are seeking a volunteer who would be interested in supporting a student to attend a half day course for Traffic Control Person training (flagger) on Thursday, January 26th from 8:30 am – 12:00 noon on Wilsey Road, Fredericton. The student is a grade 12 male who needs this course for his COOP program.
Traffic Control Person (Flaggers) course description:
This course was developed by a Provincial Committee with representatives from the Department of Transportation, WorkSafeNB, Safety Services New Brunswick and Industry. The course objectives are 3-fold: to teach and train the traffic control person in the proper methods and techniques of stopping, slowing and directing traffic; to make participants aware of the potential results of poor traffic control procedures including death and injuries to the traveling public, fellow workers and themselves; and thirdly, to reduce the possibility of damage to equipment, vehicles and materials.
We are seeking a volunteer in the Fredericton area for a young man who would like to participate in his community and build friendships. His interests include books and libraries, comics, Pokémon and some socializing. He would love to have someone to play some board games and engage in activities with while hopefully meeting new people.
He is a very nice young man with autism; has a slower speech but is able to verbally communicate. He currently has no support workers with him however he is looking for a companion to spend time with outside of his family home.
Volunteer required to provide community engagement supports for a young man with Asperger’s in his early-twenties in the Fredericton area. He enjoys drawing, reading, watching movies, going for walks and is interested in participating in a painting group. He has a very welcoming personality, polite young man and is a fast learner.
We are looking for someone to meet with him once a week for an hour. It can be any day of the week. He needs assistance with developing a weekly/monthly schedule with self-prompts for activities of daily living. Some of the things we would like to focus on are:
- Developing social skills
- Routine for paying bills on time
- Resume building / Applying for jobs
- Grocery shopping etc.
The individual is easy going and gets along with others well. He is also looking to volunteer at the foodbank once he is settled into his new home in January.
Volunteer required to provide some occasional monitoring and community engagement supports for a young man with Asperger’s in his mid-twenties in the Fredericton area. The volunteer would accompany the individual to his various appointments (when his parents are unable to accompany him) and participate in at-home and/or community-based activities intended to benefit his well being. Specifically, they hope to find someone who will spend time with the individual during his mothers’ absence when she is attending her own appointments. Also, the individual noted that weekly meetings, which would ideally take place on Mondays, 10-1 pm, would be helpful in building rapport.
An adult female we support is looking for a male or female buddy to workout with at the north side Good Life gym in Fredericton on Mondays and Thursdays 4-6 pm.
Assisting with Independent living:
Volunteer needed for a 58 year old male with Cerebral Palsy. This includes assisting him in adjusting to life in his new apartment: how to access his mailbox, getting to know the community of Marysville, practicing taking the bus within the city (volunteer rides the bus for free), making meals and helping with organizing. If you are available to do any of the above, you would not have to do all the tasks mentioned. Any support would be appreciated and is needed. The volunteer could meet with him mornings, afternoons, evenings, or weekends. Must be LGBTQ friendly.
A young lady that we support is looking to get involved in the community during evenings and weekends. She would need a drive to the connections and lives a few minutes outside of the city on the Northside. She has a variety of interests and is also interested in volunteering at the SPCA.
An individual that we support is looking for a buddy to go to the gym with once a week. He has membership at the YMCA. He uses a wheelchair and would need assistance setting up machines and using the weights. He would also like to use the YMCA pool, he needs assistance changing and being lifted in and out of the pool. We are also looking into extending his current support worker’s hours so they would be able to help him with the swimming portion.
