Here in New Brunswick, we don’t consider where our garbage goes once it’s picked up from our home. Once it’s out of sight, many of us simply don’t think about it again—but we should.
With our wide swaths of pristine land, just how much space our waste takes up on an annual basis isn’t a concern, after all, we have no shortage of places to put it. But it should be a concern. As a society, we’re throwing out more garbage than ever. In fact, for the period of 2004 to 2012 Statistics Canada reported a near seven percent increase in the amount of garbage Canadians tossed out – 9.6 million tonnes!
It’s likely that a significant amount of that waste is textile items. The number of garments produced around the world keeps on growing, but so does the amount we throw out. According to Value Village, North Americans alone tossed 10.5 million tonnes of clothing to landfills. The truly unfortunate part is a large percentage of those garments likely could have been used by someone else, continuing their lifecycle.
People surveyed by Value Village say the chief reason why they don’t donate their used clothing is simply because throwing it out is easier. We need to do better, and the New Brunswick Association for Community Living (NBACL) is here to make donating as easy as possible.
Our Big Orange Bins (BOBs) are located in convenient locations in cities and towns around New Brunswick. Simply place your items in a garbage bag and drop into a BOB near you. A complete list of locations can be found on NBACL’s website nbacl.nb.ca/ccp
To make the donation process even more convenient you can also arrange a free pickup for your donated items. Simply fill out the “Request a Pick Up” online form on the NBACL website or call us toll free 1-866-622-2548. Just leave your clearly marked items outside and we’ll take care of the rest.
Together we can keep waste out of our landfills. Last year alone, NBACL was successful in diverting more than 2 million pounds of used clothing from New Brunswick landfills. This effort reduced our collective environmental footprint as New Brunswickers.

Donating clothing also goes beyond just having an environmental benefit; you’re also giving back to your community. Our partnership with Value Village ensures the clothing collected raises important dollars which allow NBACL to offer essential programs and services to those with intellectual or developmental disabilities in New Brunswick. By simply donating a bag of clothing, the impact you’re having is far reaching to all corners of our province.
