It’s time to “Give a Sh!rt”!

Posted in: In the News, In Urgent Need Of, NBACL Blog

OK, friends, it’s time to get your sh!rts together! The kids are back in school and fall is in the air – a great time to bag up outgrown summer clothes and last year’s cold weather gear that’s going to be replaced. May as well look through the toys, footwear and small household items, too, and bag or box up what you don’t want anymore. Once you’ve done that, you’re all set to “Give a Sh!rt” in support of the New Brunswick Association for Community Living. Erin and Alecia

Your donation will not only help Community Living provide much needed supports for people with an intellectual disability right here in New Brunswick, but will also help the province’s landfills.

For example, did you know that over 20,000 New Brunswickers have an intellectual disability, and that many of them face multiple barriers to having a good life in their communities – lack of employment opportunities, poverty, lack of supports and social isolation, to name a few.

And when it comes to the environment, did you know that in a single year, Canada produces enough textile waste – clothing and other goods like upholstery – to create a mountain three times the size of Toronto’s Rogers Centre stadium?

These things can change, if you “Give a Sh!rt.”

What’s the connection?

When you donate your shirts and other clothing and cloth items to Community Living NB (@nbacl), you’re helping us generate the funds we need to help New Brunswickers with an intellectual disability to live, learn, work and actively participate in their communities as valued and contributing citizens. Through our partnership with Value Village, we are able to turn your trash into the cash we need to help people right here in New Brunswick.

You’re also helping the environment by reducing your clothing footprint. Instead of ending up in the landfill, your donations are reused and recycled through local Value Village thrift stores. Here in New Brunswick, our Community Collection program already diverts as much as 3 million pounds of cloth, textiles and other items from the landfill each year.

So, how can you show that you “Give a Sh!rt”?

Well, get your sh!rts together!

Not just shirts,Shirts though. We’re also keen on your old jeans, are starving for scarves, will take leather and sweaters, jackets and rackets, boots and toques, and wouldn’t mind at all if you “sock” it to us!

Just gather up all the clothing, linens, footwear, toys and other small household items you want to give and put them in garbage bags and drop them off in one of our Big Orange Donation bins across the province in Bathurst, Edmundson, Fredericton, Grand Falls, Miramichi, Moncton, Oromocto, Pennfield, Saint John, St. George, Sussex or Woodstock (find all bin locations here).

As well, if you have a lot to give and want to arrange a pick-up, just call us at 1-866-NBACL4U.
