Recognizing that adaptation is an important part of inclusion, the educational team at École Mgr-Lang strives to continually improve its inclusion practices. All students are included and valued in the classroom, and the school team emphasizes that inclusion is more than just student presence; it’s an approach that focuses on each student’s strengths.

The school district has a coaching team that provides support to staff in the schools so that they can embrace a culture of continuous improvement. The aim is to promote a culture of improvement, not perfection.

“There are so many great things going on at Mgr-Lang,” says Dany Desjardins, director of learning support services for the District scolaire francophone du Nord-Ouest. “Sometimes it’s big projects, but more often it’s the small everyday actions that are taken. I don’t think teachers realize just how important those small actions are.”

It’s clear for teachers at Mgr-Lang that the first priority is always the student. They are advocates for children’s rights. Teachers question practices and structures, not students, when there are issues. The staff at this school understand what inclusive education is all about: it’s not just a place, it’s foremost an approach and values centred on the children’s needs.
